PrologueAlderley house, late spring.Lord Grant sighed as he pushed the pile of papers to the back of his desk and leaned back into his leather chair.“For gods sake Worthington, stop pacing about!” He snapped finally after tiring of his butlers endless circling of the room.
“I’m sorry Sir; I’m just so worried about your state of anxiety at the moment. It can’t be doing anything for your condition, is there anything I can do to ease your mind?” He stood beside his master as he held his head in his hands in despair.
“Worthington, Its the Lady Georgiana, I have but a short time left on this earth and I live every hour worrying of how my fortune will fare in her frivolous hands.”
“My Lord, it pains me to tell you this but I think you should know that I have had word from the village. There is an old tavern down by the lakes where many of the town’s people gather of an evening. She has been seen by the locals and myself on one occasion, drinking and smoking and...” He paused for a moment, knowing what he was going to say next might break the elderly man completely.
“Go on Worthington, please, I need to know!” His master pleaded, gripping his arm in his frail bony hand.
“Well Sir, I hate to say it but I have seen her on more than one occasion showing public affection for the men folk and partaking in acts that are better saved for the bedroom.” He felt Lord Grant’s fingers slip from his arm and could have sworn he heard the old man emit a tiny sob.
He had known that his niece was the mischievous type, the cleaning staff and house maid had already told him that she would disappear off late at night and not return until the early hours of the morning. Each evening when she sweetly came to his side to wish him goodnight, he would fret inside knowing that within the hour she would be sneaking out to god knows where and playing the wrong games with all kinds of men. It terrified him that one day he may have to deal with the problem of an illegitimate child or a money hungry ruffian from the bars down town. Remembering his late wife and son he gave a sad smile, if only the car crash hadn’t taken them so early, he would have been spending his final few months with the peace of mind that his estate would be in capable and safe hands.
Georgiana had only been in his life for the last three years. On finding out that his condition was terminal he had used every ounce of his strength to trace his remaining family links. The need to find an heir or heiress became more frantic as time went on. Georgiana was the only daughter of his philandering, womanising drunk of a brother, Frederick. After frittering away his money and house Frederick had got involved in drugs and been imprisoned for the foreseeable future leaving his teenage daughter at a convent in the hope that she might face a brighter future. Lord Grant had finally located her via the internet; she had been working as a burlesque dancer with a travelling cabaret act. It had taken a lot of persuasion and proof of what was at stake to get Georgiana to reluctantly come and live at Alderley house. He had high hopes back then of turning his wild eyed rebellious niece into the lady that she should have been. This latest news from Worthington was like a kick in the teeth; despite her fondness for drinking and smoking he had always seen Georgiana as a sweet young girl. Many an afternoon they had sat together chatting about the history of the house and the family and although she had always refused to talk about her parents, they had always found something to talk about. To think of her openly offering herself to random men and performing all kinds of adult acts in public places made him feel sickened to his core.
Worthington bit his lip, wondering if his master would approve of his next suggestion. Taking a deep breath he took the chance to speak his mind.
“If you would forgive me for being so bold Sir, the Lady Georgiana may benefit from spending some time at an institution owned by a very good friend of mine.” He slid a booklet across the desk. Lord Grant looked up, intrigued and flicked through the pages. After a few moments he glanced up at his butler, open mouthed in shock.
“My god man! Do you really think this would help? It sounds bloody barbaric!”
“Yes Sir! In fact it has been proven in many cases to aid in the transformation into a Lady.” He pointed to the recommendations and reviews on the second page. Lord Grant nodded in approval at the accounts of hopeless cases that had been turned into moral, elegant, well speaking and financially intelligent members of society.
“Worthington, will you go and find Lady Georgiana, I believe we need to have a very important conversation.” He announced finally, sitting back in his chair. Worthington nodded and as he turned to head towards the door a grin began to form across his face.
