The Heart Knows More Than the Mind
DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN THE BAND THAT WAS ONCE KNOWN AS SAVAGE GARDEN. NEITHER DO I KNOW THEM. IF IN FACT I DID KNOW THEM, I WOULDN’T HAVE TO MAKE UP STORIES ABOUT THEIR LIVES TO AMUSE MYSELF AND THOSE WHO LIKE TO READ THEM. SO PLEASE DON’T SUE ME, BECAUSE I AM A POOR SLACKER WHO DOES NOT HAVE A JOB AND COULDN’T AFFORD A LAWYER.
Darren Hayes sat on the bed in his posh hotel room. The rain fell softly onto the windowpane, the fireplace casting shadows in harmony with the rhythm of the droplets. He chewed gently on the end of his BIC pen while he pondered lyrics fonew new song on his solo album. Savage Garden was on its last leg of the Affirmation tour, and its final journey as a band. Darren tried to think, but his thoughts kept returning to Daniel and the night they ended, not as a band, but as a couple. Now, while they were completing their tour, Daniel kept bringing tasteless looking girls in heels and cheap perfume to dinner, and making it a point for everyone to watch them return to Daniel’s room. Darren couldn’t bear the thought of such tacky women touching Daniel. Although it was certain that they were officially “over” the verity still remained that Darren’s wounds were fresh and exposed. He supposed that by Daniel’s maniacal efforts to make him jealous, his wounds were just as vulnerable. Darren tried desperately to avert his thoughts to something else, but the fact remained—Daniel was all he could think about. He finally surrendered and decided that this new song could, like the others, be about Daniel. He did however retain the idea that this song would have a different tone. It wouldn’t be angry like the other two he had written, “Heart Attack”, and “Strange Relationship”. This one would express his pain. He thought back to the month leading to their blowout—the official end of Savage Garden, and ultimately, them.
The previous month
//Give me a reason why I’m feeling so blue. Every time I close my eyes, all I see is you. Give me a reason why I can’t feel my heart. Every time you leave my side, I just fall apart//
Darren woke up to find that he was alone in the bed. He became frantic. Lately Daniel had been acting on edge, and Darren was waiting for the worst to come. It seemed that every time Daniel was out of his sight, Darren couldn’t contain himself from becoming depressed or prophesizing the worst.
“Daniel?” he called. “Daniel?” he raced into the kitchen where he nearly collided with Daniel.
“Yeah? I’m here,” Daniel said, a bit startled by Da’s s’s sudden display.
“Just making sure,” he said, and planted a light kiss on Daniel’s lips.
“Why are you so jumpy?” Daniel asked.
“I don’t know,” Darren began, “I guess I just get the feeling that what we have is too good to be true. I have the man of my dreams, and a wonderful career. I just keep thinking that one day, I’ll wake up, and it will all have just been a dream. I keep waiting for reality to set in,” he finished not meeting Daniel’s eyes.
Daniel hesitated, but after a pregnant pause, he said, “Don’t be ridiculous. We can’t both be dreaming,” he kissed Darren’s forehead. The rest of the day was fairly mellow. The boys had been given the day off, and they just stayed at home. Finally, at around ten o’ clock, Daniel went to sleep. Darren followed an hour later to discover the signs of sleeping, heavy, even breathing. He watched Daniel’s eyelids twitch and wondered what he was dreaming about. Finally, his own eyelids grew heavy and he fell into a deep sleep.
//And when you’re fast asleep, I wonder where you go. Can you tell me? I wanna know.
Because I miss you, and this is all I wanna say. I guess I miss you, Beautiful; these three words have said it all. You know I miss you. I think about you when you’re gone, I guess I miss you nothing’s wrong. I don’t mean to carry on//
The next day was another day off for the boys, and Darren had to go shopping with Leonie. He had been promising her for ages that they would, and she was not letting him put it off. They shopped for a few hours, and the mood was placid. The stopped at the outdoor food court, and Darren spaced out, offering the occasional half smile and ‘uh-huh’ where needed. He was having a hard time focusing on what Leonie was saying, because his mind was occupied with thoughts of Daniel. He looked around, surveying the scene. For a Friday, the food court was somewhat deserted, leaving only the occasional senior citizen or student to help make it seem less deserted. Darren then noticed something he hadn’t before. Wildflowers had been planted around the outdoor food court’s half walls. Darren couldn’t believe what a difference a few flowers made. Strangely enough, Daniel’s head seemed to be blossoming out of every beautiful flower.
//Give me a reason, why I can’t concentrate, the world is turning upside down, spinning round and round. Give me a reason why I now understand the beauty and simplicity of everything surrounding me. You’ve got a way of spreading magic everywhere. Anywhere I go, I know you’re always there//
When Darren went home, Daniel wasn’t there. Darren went into the den and watched TV.
eemeeemed as if every soap opera on the planet was on the tube, and Darren couldn’t help but imagine himself and Daniel in every love scene. Darren must have spaced out, because when he came around, night had fallen, and the soap opera was replaced by the news. He heard the door open as Daniel returned home and went into the kitchen to greet him. The two embraced and began to talk about the day’s events.
“Leonie and I were spent by lunchtime, so after catching a salad and a smoothie, we called it quits. How about you? What did you do today?” Darren asked him expectantly.
“Oh, well, I just went out with Karl and had a few drinks. Watched the game. No big deal,” Daniel said rather sheepishly. He then got up from the table and mumbled something about the bathroom as he made his way there. Darren couldn’t help but feel a pang of suspicion that he hadn’t been invited to accompany Daniel to the restroom. He always used to be dragged along. Darren crawled into bed and fell asleep right away.
//It sounds ridiculous, but when you leave the room, there’s a part of me that just wants to follow you too. Because I miss you, and this is all I wanna say. I guess I miss you, Beautiful; these three words have said it all. You know, I miss you. I think about you when you’re gone. I guess I miss you, nothing’s wrong, I don’t mean to carry on//
When Darren awoke the next morning, He found that on the pillow next to
him, where Daniel’s head was supposed to be, was a note. He felt his temperature drop. With trembling hands, he unpinned the letter from the pillowcase and began to read it.
Dear Darren,
I know it must seem strange, waking up to a letter,
but it’s the only way I could bring myself to tell you how
I feel. I’m spent on the whole fame thing. I want nothing
more to do with it. So, that’s why I’ve decided that it’s
time for you to make a choice—me, or a career in music.
It seems harsh, but it’s the way I feel, and I hope that you
can understand it. I love you, but I need to do what’s best
for me, and I know that being exposed to celebrity beyond
the Affirmation tour is not it.
Love,
Daniel
Darren couldn’t believe what he was reading. How could Daniel force him to choose between the biggest loves of his life? It was so unfair. He ran into the kitchen, calling Daniel’s name, but Daniel wasn’t in the condo at all. Darren couldn’t believe it. He was so angry at Daniel foring ing him choose. He needed to get out, and get a drink. He grabbed his keys from his shoulder bag and raced outside to his hunter green Jeep Cherokee. He drove to the nearest bar, and immediately ordered scotch on the rocks he drank it very quickly and ordered another. And then another. The door to the bar opened and a reporter sat next to Darren. He tried desperately to disappear from the barstool, but unfortunately, the laws of physics wouldn’t permit it and the reporter recognized him.
“Darren Hayes?” she asked incredulously.
“Yeah, that’s me,” he answered weakly.
“Wow. I hear Savage Garden is coming out with a new album. Can you tell me anything about that?” she asked, poising her pen to write his response on her little green notepad.
Anger erupted in Darren. “There is no more Savage Garden!” he screamed as he slammed his drink onto the bar, spilling scotch in every direction. He raced out of the bar and into his Jeep. He drove home, his vision blurred by tears. When he got there, the condo was silent and dark. He knew that Daniel hadn’t returned. No matter, he thought and went to the bedroom. He undressed and crawled into bed. He stared at the ceiling for a while, and even in the midst of all his pain, he felt a sliver of hope that Daniel would return home and they could work this out.
//It’s such a hard life, most of the time, I’m just surviving. That’s why I want you to know, in a world where sincerity has lost its meaning you fill my world with so much hope. And I miss you, this is all I wanna say. I guess I miss you, Beautiful; these three words have said it all. You know, I miss you. I think about you when you’re gone, I guess I miss you, nothing’s wrong, I don’t mean to carry on//
Darren’s thoughts of hope were shattered as he was roughly shaken awake by a very angry Daniel. The reporter had raced back to her office in her greedy attempts to better her career, and the story that Savage Garden was no more had hit the front page by morning.
“How the fuck could you do this to me?” Daniel screamed into Darren’s face.
“To you? I’m the one woke up to a letter!”
“Well I’m glad to see you’ve made your decision!”
“Well it’s not as if you were here so we could discuss it!”
“And that gives you the excuse to tell the fucking press?”
“Well, it’s not like you cared how I felt anyway! Making me choose between the two things I love the most,” Darren began, but Daniel cut him off.
“So you’d rather have your face plastered on the walls of suburban teeny boppers than be with me? Well I can see where your loyalties lie,” Darren then cut Daniel off
“Those ‘teeny boppers’ as you call them have NEVER LET ME DOWN! Not like you, Daniel. It’s gotta be about you. So you know what? I’m glad I chose music, because it will never leave me like YOU!”
“Fine! I don’t care anymore!”
“ME EITHER!” And that was that. The band would finish Affirmation, and then they would be no more.
Back to the present
//You know, I miss you, and this is all I wanna say. I guess I miss you Beautiful; these three words have said it all. You know, I miss you and this is all I wanna do. I know it doesn’t sound too cool, but maybe I’m in love with you//
Darren looked at the tear soaked page and centered in on the last few words. ‘It’s
true,’ he thought. ‘I am in love with you.’ He looked at the door. He hadn’t seen any whores in heels and cheap perfume at dinner tonight. Maybe, just maybe, Daniel was alone in his room across the hall. He got up, put his notebook in his pocket, and crept across the hall. He closed his eyes and tapped on the door. He heard movement inside and instantly regretted his actions. Maybe there was someone there. Daniel opened the door before Darren could escape.
“Yeah?” he asked.
“I- I just thought maybe we could talk,” Darren said not meeting Daniel’s eyes. Daniel motioned Darren into the dimly lit room and beckoned for him to sit on the sofa. Darren sat down, and Daniel sat down beside him. “About that day when y-you know,” he began. “I just wanted to say I never should have talked to that fame hungry reporter. Things didn’t turn out the way I would have expected them to, and I hope you can forgive me,” he finished, daring to look at Daniel.
“I guess I have to forgive you, if I want you to forgive me for writing that stupid note. I should have come to you, and told you how I felt. Can you forgive me?”
“Of course I can forgive you. I love you, and that won’t ever change.”
“I uh I love you too Dazza,” Daniel said, tears glistening in his eyes.
“Danny, do you think maybe we could uh, give it another go, and see how it works out with my solo career?” Darren asked hopefully.
“I’m sorry, Dare, I’m just not ready for that. Maybe in the future.”
“Right. Well goodnight, Daniel,” Darren said as he turned to leave. In his haste to bury himself in his pillows and cry, he dropped his note, co, completely oblivious to the fact. As the door slammed, Daniel made to follow, but stopped when he stepped on the notebook. He picked it up and read the new lyrics. He thought for a moment and took the notebook over to his desk and began to write.
//You know, I miss you, and this is all I wanna say. I guess I miss you, nothing’s wrong. I don’t mean to carry on, I just miss you. Yeah, it’s true, I miss you, Baby. And when you’re walking out that door, I know I miss you. You make me wanna ask for more. I just miss you. Yeah, it’s true, I miss you, Baby//
He would return Darren’s notebook tomorrow at breakfast. But for now, he just held it against him, missing Darren.
