The building collapses with little warning save for some rumbling, not enough time for anyone to realize what's happening. The ground shakes like an earthquake and eight year old Hailie has time to imagine the floor splitting into pieces, like a giant mouth and swallowing her whole. She feels the strong arms of one of her daddy's best friends encircle her body, protecting her with his own. The roof caves in and she screams as the world comes raining down on top of her.
He holds the little body against his and hunkers down low. The building trembles and sand and grit rain down on top of them, a ceiling beam collapses near by. The electricity has gone out and his adrenaline is pumping. All his senses are on overload especially now that he can't rely on his vision. He thinks it's a bomb, a really big bomb. He wonders if there's a bank next door. 911 flashes through his head, terrorist's maybe? Why would terrorists hit a department store? Are Sears shoppers really that big of a threat? He doesn't know. Hailie's body trembles sliy iny in his arms, his thoughts shift to Marshall. He needs to find Marshall, see if he's all right, see if anyone is all right.
He wishes he had a gun as he moves through the darkness. He wouldn't feel so blind and defenseless if he had a gun. Hailie is balanced on his hip, arms laced together around his neck. She doesn't need to tell him that she's scared.
"We gon' ta find yo' daddy." Curtis whispers to her. There's dead silence in the building. He wonders if everyone is dead. It was late and there hadn't been many people in the store to begin with.
Marshall had said he'd wait in the car, him and Kim needing time to talk in private. Curtis agreeing to take Hailie with him to go look at grills, to allow them time to do so. Hailie goes without complaint; having seen her parents "talk" and knowing how bad some of their fights could turn.
Curtis nearly trips over the body of one.one. He lets Hailie slid off his hip, holding the child by the hand instead. He doesn't stop and check if the person is alive or not, Hailie lingers but he pulls on her, leading them away.
He moves slowly to where he remembers the doors of the exit being. The electricity must be cut outside too he decides, because no light seems to shine from anywhere. Hailie walks beside him, hand clutching tightly to his. She stops mid walk and tugs on his arm, he stands still not following her but waiting a second. After an instant a tiny flame sparks in her hand, she'snd and a lighter. They're near the checkout counter and Curtis can read the nametag of the cashier whose head is crushed in by the register, eyes frozen open in shock. It says ALEX in bold red letters and then underneath the name it says, "How may I help you?" Hailie can read it too.
"Don' look at dat baby." He pulls her against him and takes the lighter from her. He can see the exit now. They're almost there.
