Zack’s POV
Something was bothering Matt. He was pretty sure he knew what it was but he asked anyway, “What is it?” he murmured straddling his lap. Matt wrapped his arms around him and sighed, “Exactly what you think it is.” He kissed his neck and Zack wrapped his arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.
“You’ll figure it out.” He whispered.
“I think I have.” Matt muttered darkly. He suddenly felt angry and betrayed but most of all hurt. He pulled back and looked into Matt’s dark eyes surprised and a little frightened, “Who…” he almost didn’t want to know. Matt shook his head, “I’m not sure yet but I’m going to find out.” He growled.
Reality: I don’t like him acting like this. He damn well better figure this out soon.
Denial: It can’t be that bad.
Sex Drive: Fuck ‘em. He always feels better after a little rough sex.
He shook his head to clear his thoughts, “You’re not going to tell me are you?” he whispered. Matt thought for a moment, “I will,” he said slowly, “but not right now.”
Reality: Well as long as he tells us sometime soon we’ll let him keep his secrecy.
Denial: No way, whoever it is has pissed him off we don’t know what he’ll do.
Reality: Unless they come after us directly he won’t do anything.
Denial: They’ve tried to kill us once already.
Reality: …He won’t do anything.
Zack sighed, “Alright, but I’m holding you to that.” He kissed him softly on the lips and some of the tension left his body.
Sex Drive: Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!!!!
Reality/Denial: NO
Sex Drive: Why the hell not!?
Reality: No sex until we’re married.
Sex Drive: Dammit whose idea was that? >_<
Reality: Ours.
Sex Drive: What?! I don’t remember being consulted on that decision!
Denial: Because we didn’t consult you.
Sex Drive: Why the hell not?!
Reality: Because we knew what your answer would be.
A wave of exhaustion moved through him and he looked at Matt knowingly, “Time for bed.” He yawned. The singer nodded tiredly and he got off him.
Vaguely he felt Matt wake up but ignored it, until he felt the previous anger flicker through him. He sat up and looked around, “What?” he murmured, he rubbed his eyes sleepily and Matt gently pushed him back down.
“It’s nothing angel go back to sleep.” He whispered soothingly.
Reality: He has jeans on. Where is he going?
Denial: I told you he’d try something!
“Where you goin’?” he yawned wrapping his arms around his neck. Matt lay down beside him and pulled him close and he immediately began to drift off again, “I’ll be back soon.” He murmured in his ear.
“Where?” Zack asked again faintly.
“I need to know if I’m right. I won’t be gone long.” He pulled away and Zack fell back asleep.
Matt’s POV
He stepped out the back door and made sure everything was locked and then he unfurled his wings and flapped once and was lifted off the ground. He wasn’t going far, but the transportation drained him; going from upstairs to downstairs made him dizzy and so weak he could barely stand and he was going to need his energy for something else.
He reached his destination; the lights were on in the kitchen. He landed silently in the back yard and took a deep breath and shed his physical form.
He had discovered this particular trick after Charles had left, he could essentially return to his spirit form and he was invisible to everyone but Zack; which could be a pain because for the last two days he’d been toying with these fun new developments but Zack couldn’t tell if he was spirit of physical.
There was only one way to find out if he was a spirit or not, he walked up to the back door and took another deep breath and stepped forward. He passed through the door. He let out his breath and relaxed, he was in his spirit form.
There were three people in the kitchen all of them were oblivious to him. The Bear Man was standing by the counter quietly while the Bird Man and his mother argued at the table.
“You said he was dead.” She hissed.
“He was dead. No one survives a gut shot and a chest shot. Especially when they’re frag bullets.” The Bird Man said vehemently.
“He’s alive and at home right now; you should have shot him in the head! The same thing with Zack or did you not have the guts to do that?” she replied hotly.
“You want him dead so bad you kill ‘em. We did it once already and it didn’t work.” The Bird Man snapped. Matt closed his eyes and tried not to get angry.
You can’t marry a man! What the hell is wrong with you?” his mother screamed. He tried not to recoil from her harsh words but still flinched, “Nothing. I love him.” He snapped to hide his hurt.
“I did not raise a gay son! Break it off! Who the hell is this little fag you think you love?” his father snarled. His anger flared, “I’m grown fucking man I can do whatever the fuck I want. I’m getting married to him and there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it!”
“You are not gay.” His mother said firmly. He leveled her with a cool look, “I am. Deal with it.”
“Don’t talk to your mother that way.” His dad barked. He ignored him.
“Did you pick this queer up off the street when you were drunk? I told you not to drink like that.” His dad continued.
“It’s Zack.” He said quietly. They both stopped dead in their tracks.
“Zack? Little Zacky Baker? That’s who you think you’re going to marry?” her voice took on a hysterical edge, “What happened to Val? She was your girl, you two were made for each other. Zack isn’t the one, go find Val and ask her out again.”
“Val already knows. I told her last week. She and Michelle are coming to the wedding.” He kept his voice quiet but the fury was still there.
“If you don’t break this off right now so help me God I will do it for you!” she shrieked.
“No. It’s my life. I will love who I want and marry whoever the fuck I want.” And then he turned and walked out the door.
Reality: That bitch.
Denial: She wouldn’t…
Reality: She fuckin’ did.
His mother pulled out a piece of paper and slammed it on the table, “This is our agreement; ten thousand to kill him and another ten to kill Zack. You didn’t kill anyone, you don’t get a dime.” She growled. Matt walked behind her and looked at the document. It was done in his father’s hand writing.
Reality: We can pick that up.
Denial: And then what are we going to do with it?
Reality: Drop it off at the police station and then we’re going back to Zack.
Zack was awake, he hadn’t been able to hide himself well enough from his sensitive lover and he could feel the worry coming from him. He focused on his hand; it was difficult but he could pick things up in his spirit form but it took a lot more energy and concentration than he liked to use. Especially when he knew people would be freaking out.
He grabbed the contract and picked it up. The room went absolutely still. He could see the Bird Man’s eyes widen and the Bear Man drew his gun. He casually opened his wings and flapped. He rose through his old room and then through the ceiling and he was in the sky again. Below him the front door burst open and he saw his mother and the two thugs run out searching frantically for their damning evidence.
The officer on duty looked a little pale after the strange floating piece of paper was placed on his desk. But he numbly took it and read through it and then read it again. He picked up a phone and started dialing and Matt left.
He all but fell through the roof when he reached their home he gratefully took on his physical form and fell to the floor with a heavy thud.
“Jesus Matt! Matt what happened? Are you okay?” Zack turned him over and frantically looked him over. He reached up and pulled the smaller guitarist onto his chest. Zack relaxed and they laid in silence for a few minutes before Zack spoke, “Where did you go?”
Matt closed his eyes and sighed, “My parents house.” He felt Zack tense against him, “What…?”
He pulled his smaller lover on top of him even more and held him closer, “They’d rather have me dead than married to a man.” He whispered. A tremor shook Zack’s body, “I’m sorry.”
“Not your fault baby.” He rolled them over and let his wings settle around them like the shield they were and looked into Zack’s teary eyes, “I love you. You are all I need.” He whispered. Zack hugged him fiercely and kissed his shoulder, “I love you.”
