Chapter Four
“Thank you so much for comin’ with me today, Emmy.” Bridget, Emmy’s fourteen-year-old cousin, smiled at her. “It’s so good havin’ you home. It’s nice to have another female around the house besides, Grandmum.” Bridget was the only girl in a family with five children. Her brothers were a rough and tumble lot that often left Bridget out.
Ruffling her cousin’s hair, Emmy grinned. “Trust me I understand. It’s kinda like having a sister, which I love. So where are we going first?” This was the first opportunity that Emmy got to spend with her cousin. For the past two days Kian had kept her busy with reminiscing about their childhood days. Occasionally Kian would ask her questions about her life now, but always he avoided any about him.
“The Record Room. There is a couple of cds I wanna get.” Bridget led them down the street on the way to the store.
Looking around the first thing that Emmy noticed was the big sign on the Record Room storefront. “What’s this Westlife?” She turned to look at Bridget.
Bridget’s eyes went wide as she gasped. “Oh my god you have gotta be jokin’ me?” Then she started giggling. “Oh right you wouldn’t know about Westlife bein’ from New York.”
“Is it some Irish thing that I don’t know about?” Emmy teased.
“They are like the best boy band ever. Only they really aren’t like a true boy band anymore. Their music really has matured and is so cool!” Bridget gushed on. “Not to mention they are so cute! Come on I’ll show you.” She began to push Emmy into the Record Room.
“You know we had boy bands back home. I used to love Backstreet Boys. We even had some British ones come over like Five.” Emmy laughed.
“That’s how Westlife got its start, by openin’ up for Backstreet.” Bridget rattled on.
Entering the music store Emmy began to look around. It seemed like a typical record store. But it was what she caught sight of next that would forever change everything. Taking a small step into the store she ran into Kian, sort of. Right in front of her face was a huge almost life sized poster of Westlife with her best friend staring back at her. Emmy’s jaw dropped as her heart started racing. “Hot damn.” She breathed.
Bridget started to giggle. “I told you they were cute. That one is Kian, Kian Egan. My favorite is Shane. He is so amazing. His voice is like an angel. But he’s gonna marry-“
“Kian’s cousin, Gillian, yea I know.” Emmy finished for her, with her voice barely above a whisper.
Bridget’s brow crinkled. “Yea, how did you know? I thought you said you didn’t know about Westlife.”
Emmy couldn’t take her eyes off of the poster. The lads were all dressed in black jackets and they all wore different color button down shirts. Still her eyes never moved from Kian, with the gray dress shirt he wore, giving a hint of bare chest. Yet it was the full smile on his face that made her smile. It seemed as if he was looking right back at her.
“Emmy have you heard any of the lads sing or watched any of their videos?” Bridget’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
Slowly turning her head in her cousin’s direction Emmy tried to clear her head of the cobwebs that were forming. “Videos? Just how popular are these boys?”
Bridget rolled her eyes. “They are only in the Guinness Book of World records for the most straight to number one hits. Does that give you a clue?”
“Oh my god.” Emmy looked back at the poster. So this is why Kian had the BMW and the new house. It all made sense now. But why would he hide this from her? It was nothing to be ashamed of, far from it. It was a bit surprising because the Kian that she knew always had rock music blasting from his stereo. He always joked that he would be famous, but it had always been a joke between them. Then Emmy started to look around the store and there was Westlife everywhere. Every time she turned around, Kian’s face was staring back at her.
“I have all of their dvds and cds. In fact their greatest hits tour is gonna be startin’. Oh and guess what, they are comin’ home to Sligo to do their last concert of the tour!” Bridget laughed excitedly.
“I want to see these dvds and hear the music.” Emmy felt a smirk play across her lips.
“Come on, let’s go home and I’ll show you.”
* * * * * *
Kian rang the doorbell of the Riley cottage and waited for someone to answer. He had been with the lads all day preparing to start the tour rehearsals. This would be a massive tour and all of them were extremely excited. Once again Kian made sure his input was put into the show. In fact all the lads had say in what they did up there on the stage. It was just as important to them as the music they sang.
The door opened and there stood Moira with a mysterious smirk on her face. “Kian, good to see ya again lad.”
“Hello Mrs. Riley, good to see ya again too. Is Emmy here? I checked the pub and they said she had the day off.” Kian quickly rushed on in an effort to explain why he was there. He didn’t know why he had to explain, but he did.
“Oh she’s here. She is upstairs with her cousin. Come on in.” Moira stepped aside so Kian could enter. She couldn’t help but smile as she thought of what Kian was going to say when he saw Emmy.
“Thanks Mrs. Riley. Just upstairs you said?” Kian walked into the cottage.
“That’s right, lad. Just follow the sound of your voice.”
“Ok tha-“ Kian instantly whipped his head around to stare at the older woman. Time seemed to be in slow motion as his jaw dropped slightly. “The sound of me voice?” He swallowed hard. He didn’t like the sound of that. What was going on?
Moira nodded. “It seems that Bridget, Emmy’s cousin, is quite interested in Westlife. In fact when they went into town today they happened to stop by the Record Room.” She smiled coyly at the young lad.
“Oh bloody hell.” Kian looked back up at the stairs with a worried expression on his face.
“Go on up Kian. It’s not as bad as ya think.” Moira patted his back as she began to head into the living room.
Staring up the stairs Kian didn’t move a muscle. Emmy knew the truth now. He found he was gripping the rail so hard his knuckles were turning white. Why was he so scared? Maybe because of the reason that out of everyone, Kian wanted her approval the most. In that few seconds no one’s opinion mattered more than Emmy’s. Would she hate him for holding the truth from her?
“Go on upstairs, Kian.” Moira called out from the living room.
Grinning as he shook his head, Kian slowly began to take one step at a time until he was at the top of the stairs. Instantly he heard Shane’s voice blaring from the bedroom at the far end of the hall. Then he heard a fit of giggles. Giggles were a good sign, weren’t they? Taking a deep breath, Kian walked to the end of the hall. Grasping the doorknob in his hand, he quietly opened the door.
“Aren’t they great?” Bridget laughed as she looked at the tv. “Isn’t Shane adorable?”
Emmy chuckled as she thought of what Shane would say at being called adorable. “Yea, he is.” Her eyes focused on the television, smiling as she watched old childhood friends.
“There goes Kian again. He’s one of the better dancers of the band.” Bridget pointed out.
“I can see that. The man can shake his booty.” Emmy bit her lip to keep from laughing. Watching her Kian dance his way through the song, she couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to have him dance for her like that.
Bridget looked over at her cousin. “Who’s your favorite again?”
Emmy stared at the tv as Kian and Shane were talking about something. She still couldn’t believe that she was watching her oldest and dearest friend on tv. This week had been full of surprises with reuniting with Kian. But then to find out that he was part of something as big as Westlife, that was the biggest shock of them all. Then she caught something out of the corner of her eye and looked up. Her eyes widened as she saw Kian standing there, watching her intently. “Kian.” She said softly, her eyes locking with his.
“I thought you said Mark was becomin’ your favorite?” Bridget looked at her confused.
“Mark? Mark is your favorite?” Kian blurted out in outrage as his eyes widened.
Bridget whipped around quickly and when she saw Kian standing in her doorway her jaw dropped open. “Oh my good god!” She squealed.
Kian’s blue eyes were focused on Emmy as she sat on the floor. “Of all of us, you chose Mark as your favorite?” He tried to tease her, but there was an underlining of hurt in his voice.
“Well he is the only single one.” Emmy teased as a smile lit up her face.
“So ya found out?” Kian looked over at the tv. He felt his stomach clench as he turned his head back to her, waiting for her response. Blue locked with green as they stared at each other for a few seconds.
“I can’t believe you kept it from me. Why?” Emmy asked him as she cocked her head.
“Kian Egan? Emmy! You know Kian Egan?” Bridget squealed in delight.
Turning to her cousin, Emmy couldn’t help but laughing. “Sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, kiddo.”
“How? When? Why?” Bridget rattled off all her questions at once. “Oh my god, Kian Egan.” She turned to stare at Kian. “There is a member of Westlife standin’ in me bedroom.”
“Relax, he’s just Kian.” Emmy shook her head as she shrugged. “Kian this is my cousin, Bridget.”
“Hey! Just Kian?” Kian gave Emmy a look of mock annoyance. Then he held out his hand and took Bridget’s and shook it. “Nice to meet ya Bridget. Nice to meet the cousin of me best friend.”
Bridget’s head darted back from Emmy to Kian. “Best friend? Emmy Marie McAllistair you have some explainin’ to do! You knew who Kian was all along didn’t ya?” She pushed her cousin.
Emmy couldn’t help but laugh. “No really I didn’t, not until we walked into the Record Room today. It seems someone never told me that he was in the most popular band in the UK.” She arched her eyebrows as she looked at Kian.
Kian shrugged as he grinned at her. “Ya never asked.” Then he laughed harder as he dodged a pillow that came flying at his head. “Tryin’ to kill me already? I don’t think your cousin would like it if ya killed off her favorite Lifer.”
“For your information you’re not her favorite. Shane is.” Emmy stuck her tongue out at Kian.
Kian looked at Bridget with mock outrage. “Shane? I’m not anyone’s favorite?” He spoke in a hurtful little boy voice as he pouted.
Bridget giggled as Emmy rolled her eyes. Then Bridget turned to Emmy. “Do ya know the rest of the band too? Do you know Shane?”
Emmy immediately looked guilty. “Well…”
“Emmy! How can you hold secrets like this from me?” Bridget hit her cousin with a pillow.
Emmy laughed as she tried to duck. “It’s not really a secret. Remember when I told you that I had a best friend when I lived here with Gran back when I was little? Well that friend is Kian.”
“You mean he was the one who ya made dress up like one of your private school chums so ya could sneak him past Uncle Andrew?” Bridget laughed. She looked over at Kian and began laughing harder. “Kian in a dress! I would have paid to see that.”
Kian’s eyes flew to Emmy as a blush began to stain his cheeks. “I can’t believe ya told her that!” Mortification flooded over his face.
“I’m sorry but cousins share all kinds of secrets.” Emmy smiled sweetly up at him.
“HA! You weren’t sharin’ all of your secrets.” Bridget mock glared at her.
Kian came and sat on the floor near Emmy. “So what are ya watchin’?” He quickly tried to change the subject.
“We were watchin’ one of the dvds.” Bridget grinned. “I was gonna make her listen to some of the cds next.”
“I’m sure you don’t want to listen to your own albums. We can get out of here if you want.” Emmy turned to look over at Kian. It was slowly sinking in that he was one of the biggest celebrities in the UK. This wasn’t the same Kian that she knew all those years ago. He was rich and famous. Then a thought crossed her mind. Money and fame changed a lot of people. She knew this firsthand. But it didn’t seem to phase Kian at all. Bitterly she wondered what her father would say if he ever found out that all of his objections to Kian were now suddenly gone. She wouldn’t be in the mess she was in right now.
“We can stay.” Kian flashed her another grin as he leaned back against the bed and threw his arms back behind his head. He was actually quite anxious to see Emmy’s reaction to him.
Bridget giggled as she looked at the way Kian winked at Emmy. “I think she will love World of Our Own.” She reached over and put in the cd. “This one has some really good songs on it.”
Emmy gave a tight smile as she looked over at Kian. She caught the look in his eye, it was a look of apprehension. It was then it dawned on her. He was nervous! He was actually scared to see if she would like the music. As if in an unconscious way to soothe him, she moved her hand over to rest on his thigh.
As the beginning of Queen Of My Heart began to play, Kian smiled as Bridget fought to not sing along. Then he surprised her by singing softly. Bridget grinned at him as she joined him. He looked over and noticed Emmy had her eyes shut as a small smile played along her lips. His hand came over to cover her’s as their fingers intertwined. “Do ya like it?”
Opening her eyes, Emmy moved her eyes over to look at him. Her emerald eyes were glassy from unshed tears. “This song kind of reminds me of us. I mean the part about the secret place and the going away part.” She laughed nervously.
Kian’s eyes opened wide as a shocked look appeared on his face. “You know what, you’re right.” He squeezed her hand as he continued to sing softly to her.
I’ll always look back, as I walk away
This memory will last for eternity
And all of our tears will be lost in the rain
When I find my way back to your arms again
But until that day you know you are the Queen of My Heart
Emmy grinned as she laid her head on Kian’s shoulder as they listened to the rest of the cd. Bridget was right, this was a brilliant album. The ballads were beautifully sung while the up tempo songs made her smile. “Do you write any of your own songs?” She asked him.
“Yea he does.” Bridget spoke out but blushed hard when Kian chuckled. “Um..not that I would know or anythin’.”
“Which ones on here?” Emmy asked as she began to look through the small booklet that came with the cd. She smiled as she saw Kian with slightly longer hair. But it was his single picture that gave her pause. “This is a good picture of you.”
“What, Mark’s not your favorite anymore?” Kian teased.
“Well…” Emmy made it look like she was thinking. “He is single, and not to mention this devastating blue eyes.”
Kian reached over and took her face as he batted his eyes as he gave her a mock pout. “In case ya haven’t noticed, I’ve got blue eyes too.” When Bridget started laughing, Kian winked at her. “I’m wearin’ her down.”
“You are like my brother, can’t like you.” Emmy playfully pushed him back. “Besides, you have a girlfriend Mr. Egan. Speaking of Jodi, where is she?”
“She is at the house. We’re all goin’ out tonight. In fact that’s why I came over. I was wonderin’ if ya would come with us?” Kian looked hopeful.
“Who’s we? If it’s just you and Jodi, I think you guys need some alone time together.” Emmy said cautiously. “I’ve spent the last two days with you.”
“Sick of me already?” Kian put on the best pout he could. “How do ya like that? Nine long years of not seein’ her, and after two days she’s sick of me already?” He turned to look at Bridget.
“No, I’m not sick of you. I love spending time with you.” Emmy laughed. “But I just think maybe Jodi would mind.”
“The lads are goin’ too. Come on, you’ll have fun.” Kian pleaded. “Gilly is goin’ to be there.”
Bridget’s eyes went wide. “Emmy you’ll get to hang out with Westlife, and you’re not gonna go? I’ll go.”
Kian chuckled as he nudged Bridget with his shoulder. “Sorry lass, you’re a bit too young yet.”
Emmy gave Bridget and Kian a defeated smile. “Sure I’ll go.” Even though her answer was yes, she still felt nervous.
Kian gave her a smug smirk. “Ya can never say no to me.”
Rolling her eyes and groaning, Emmy pushed him over. “Don’t remind me.”
Sitting up, Kian grabbed her in a huge hug as he nuzzled her. “I still can’t believe you’re here, Little One.” Just then World of Our Own started playing and Kian smiled. “Actually this song reminds me of us.”
“How so?” Emmy turned to look at him.
Instead of telling her, Kian began to sing.
We got a little world of our own
I tell you things that no one else knows
I let you in where no one else goes
What am I doing without you
And all of the things I’ve been looking for
Have always been here outside of my door
And all of the time I’m looking for something new
What am I doing without you
“Oh like your fear of horses?” Emmy grinned at him.
“Somethin’ like that.” Kian chuckled. Then he quickly looked at his watch. “I’d better get goin’. I’ll be back in about three hours to come get ya. Gonna be ready?” He let her go as he stood up.
“Yea, I will be. Is this a dress up thing or what?” Emmy looked up at him.
Kian shrugged. “Just wear what ya normally would when you go out back home.”
“Yes Sir.” Emmy saluted him mockingly.
Kian looked down at Bridget and stuck out his hand. “It’s was very nice to meet ya Bridget. Thank ya for breakin’ it to her easy about me job.” He winked at the young girl.
Bridget giggled as she shook Kian’s hand. “It was my pleasure. I can’t wait to show her the Ant and Dec clips.”
Kian started to blush, “Now Bridget ya don’t have to work that hard. I think we can forget about those.”
“Why? I think Emmy would love to see them.” Bridget giggled. “Wouldn’t ya Emmy?”
“Your cousin plays dirty.” Kian wagged a finger at Emmy.
Emmy smirked as she started to get up. “I’ll walk you out.”
“No, it’s ok. I’ll be fine. You just get dressed for tonight. Your favorite Mark will be there and ya wanna look good for him.” Kian teased her. Even though his tone was teasing, the thought of Emmy dressing up for Mark had Kian seeing red. She was his mate, not Mark’s.
“Shut up.” Emmy began to blush as she pushed Kian out of the bedroom. “Goodbye and I’ll see you tonight.” She called out as she closed the door behind him. When she turned around she found Bridget staring at her with a smirk on her face. “What?”
“Just mates, huh?” Bridget couldn’t help but laugh.
“Yea, Kian and I are just friends and always will be.” Emmy sat down next to her cousin.
“Emmy did ya even see the way he was lookin’ at you?” Bridget threw her hands up in exasperation.
“He looks at me like always has. Just what are you implying Bridget Ann Riley?” Emmy’s eyes narrowed.
“Kian likes you.” Bridget giggled.
“Of course he likes me, as a friend.” Emmy rolled her eyes.
“I mean REALLY likes you. As in likes more than a friend.” Bridget pressed.
“Oh come on! He’s got a girlfriend. Besides it’s not like that. Kian and I have been through a lot together. I’m just his guardian angel. I protected him from everything, like renegade branches and bullies.” Emmy laughed as she told Bridget about the times in the park long ago.
Bridget swallowed hard as she stared at her cousin. “You couldn’t protect him the second time.”
“What do you mean?” Emmy cocked her head.
“You were in New York so you couldn’t protect him the second time someone got to him.” Bridget said quietly.
“What do you mean the second time?” Emmy asked guardedly.
Bridget turned and rifled through her stack of magazines until she came up with one. Throwing it on Emmy’s lap she nodded. “Look at the article about Kian.”
With almost trembling fingers Emmy opened up the magazine. She gasped at the picture she saw there. Kian stared back at her with empty eyes and a very badly bruised face. His right eye was black and there was a cut on his nose, with the left eye looking pretty bad too. His jaw had a dusting of scruff on it mixed with the black and blue of the bruises there. “What the hell happened?” She looked up at her cousin.
“All the papers at the time said was that some childhood bullies of Kian’s attacked him. Kian wouldn’t reveal who they were. It must have been that Tommy O’Hearn.” Bridget shrugged.
“My poor Kian.” Emmy bit her lip to keep from crying as she looked at the picture. He looked like he was in so much pain and she wasn’t there to help him. “I’m so sorry.” She whispered very low, almost more to the picture than to herself.
“Ya like him don’t ya?” Bridget asked.
Lifting her head, Emmy gave a little laugh. “Come on Bridget. He’s my friend, there is nothing going on between us. Kian has a girlfriend and trust me, there are no feelings like that between us. He loves Jodi.”
Bridget raised her eyebrows. “Come on cousin, who are ya tryin’ to convince here? Me or yourself?”
That question stopped Emmy dead in her thoughts. Who was she trying to convince? She had never thought of Kian like that, or had she? The thought that she could easily slip into those thoughts scared her more than anything did…more than anything at all.
