Chapter Five
Kian leaned up against the bar as Jodi nestled herself into his arms. He put down his beer and pulled her tighter into his embrace. He smiled down at her as he ran his fingers down her back. “Enjoyin’ yourself baby?”
Lifting her head Jodi began to kiss Kian wantonly as she sucked his lower lip between her teeth. As she ran her tongue over his lip, she smiled to herself when she heard him moan. Slowly pulling away from him, she licked her lips. “Let’s get out of here.” There was heavy suggestion in her voice.
Lowering his head to kiss her again Kian moaned as he felt her hands on him. “We can’t just walk outta here. I can’t leave Emmy.” He whispered against her lips.
Breaking the kiss Jodi pushed Kian away to look at him with an angry look. “Kian since coming to Sligo I haven’t spent one night with you alone. You have been off doing things, which I know one of them was meeting her. Don’t deny it. Do you think it’s necessary to lie to me?”
“I’m sorry baby but this week has turned me upside down, between the meetings and Emmy.” He saw the look Jodi was giving him as he dodged her accusation. “Findin’ Emmy again has always been an answer to one of me prayers and now that it’s happened…” Kian trailed off.
“You’re not her nanny, Kian. Besides, I think Emmy is a big girl. She can take care of herself. Besides, I think she has already has a little gang ready to help take care of her.” She nodded towards the back of the pub.
Kian’s head abruptly lifted up and followed Jodi’s lead. His eyes narrowed as he scoped out the scene before him. The pub was crowded tonight but luckily it was mostly of the hometown crowd. He spotted Emmy right away, wedged in a booth between Mark and Bryan. She was laughing at something Mark was saying as she buried her head on his shoulder. A tightness developed in his stomach as he watched them. What the fuck was Mark doing?
“See she is fine.” Jodi pointed out. She tugged on Kian’s hand. “Dance with me?”
Looking down at his girlfriend, Kian let out a sigh as he began to feel ridiculous by worrying so much. Just like Emmy told him today, he needed to spend time with Jodi too. As he lowered his head, Kian kissed his girlfriend slowly. “Come on baby.” He began to lead her to the dance floor.
Jodi smirked to herself as she held onto Kian’s hand. Soon he would be going on his world tour and would forget about his little American back here in Sligo. Just like always after the tour he would come to her in London and she would take care of him. In fact she would take care of him so well, she would earn the title Mrs. Kian Egan.
Taking Jodi in his arms Kian held her tight as he pulled her close to his chest. Then his jaw tightened when he watched Mark beginning to lead Emmy to the dance floor. Stopping dead, Kian watched as his bandmate took Emmy gently in his arms. Unknowingly Kian began to growl low in his throat.
“Kian are you going to dance with me or not?” Jodi asked impatiently.
Pulling Jodi closer to him Kian closed his eyes as he tried to block out the image of Emmy and Mark together. What the fuck was wrong with him? Never in all the years he had known Emmy, did he feel like this. After all she was just his mate, his best friend. So why did the thought of some other man putting his hands on her initiate violent thoughts in his mind?
Mark smiled at Emmy as he slowly circled the dance floor with her in his arms. “Kian said your cousin let ya in on our little secret.”
Emmy burst out laughing. “Bridget was so shocked to find a member of Westlife walking into our house.” She shook her head. “I just can’t believe all that you boys have done so far. It’s amazing.”
“Well we try.” He breathed on his knuckles as he rubbed them against his shirt. “So do ya love livin’ in Sligo?” Mark slid his hands down to her hips as he rocked against her.
“Oh I love it. It’s so nice to be back home.” Emmy moved her arm around Mark’s neck.
“Then ya consider Sligo home instead of New York, that’s interestin’.” Mark bent his head down so Emmy could hear him better over the music. “That was quick.”
“Sligo has always been home to me. It’s where I spent the best years of my life.” Emmy answered honestly.
“Well if Kian didn’t keep ya all to himself back then, it might have been the best years of me life too.” Mark remarked with a dry grin as he watched Emmy laugh in response. “Are ya plannin’ on stayin’ then?”
“I want to but Gran’s place is getting a bit crowded.” Emmy shrugged.
“Well if ya are really serious about livin’ here, I’ll be more than happy to help ya find a place.” Mark offered as he gave her a small hug.
“Do ya mind if I cut in?”
Both Mark and Emmy turned to find Kian standing next to them as his eyes bore into her’s. There was a slight coldness to Kian’s blue eyes, which was something that Emmy had never seen before. It sent a chill up her spine as she looked at him. “Well I was dancing with Mark.”
“I’m sure Mark won’t mind.” Kian turned his eyes from Emmy onto Mark. “Will ya Mark?” There was a hard edge to his voice.
Mark could see the look in Kian’s eye and he recognized it instantly. Kian was jealous. What he couldn’t figure out was why Kian was jealous. It wasn’t as if Mark was hitting on Jodi or anything. But in the middle of a pub was the last place to start a fight. Letting Emmy go, he nodded to Kian. “No not at all.”
Something passed between the two friends and it was something Emmy couldn’t figure out. She could see that instead of pressing the issue, Mark was going to take the easy route. “I’d love to dance with you Kian.” She brightened up.
Kian pushed past Mark to take Emmy in his arms. He saw the frown Mark gave him but it didn’t matter. Wrapping his arms around her waist, he pulled her closer to his chest. Looking down at her he couldn’t get enough. She was so tiny, so petite. Tonight she was dressed simply but it didn’t take away from her beauty. Wearing a pair of black jeans that hugged her curves of her hips and a soft pink baby-t, she looked just amazing.
“You know that wasn’t nice.” Emmy softly chastised him.
“What?” Kian gave her a look of pure innocence.
“You know what.” Emmy sighed as she slid her arms around his neck as she began to rock against him.
“I wanna dance with ya, is that so wrong?” Kian asked as he smiled down at her.
“You could have waited until I was done dancing with Mark, and you were done dancing with Jodi.” Emmy pointed out. When Kian didn’t say anything, Bridget’s words came back to her. Mentally she shook her head. No, it wasn’t like that. They were friends, that’s it.
“Jodi wanted a drink so she’s at the bar.” Kian nodded his head in that direction. Pulling her head to his chest, Kian hugged her tight. “What did you and Mark talk about?” He tried to act inconspicuous but when he saw the look Emmy was giving him, his eyes widened. “What?”
“What is all this about Mark suddenly?” Emmy narrowed her eyes as she lifted her head.
“Well he IS your favorite.” Kian mimicked her in a childish voice.
“Kian John Francis Egan! Is that what this is all about?” Emmy couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re taking what Bridget said way too seriously. You have to understand this is all strange for me. I mean I just see you boys as good old friends. Not the sexiest boy band in the UK.”
“So ya think we’re sexy?” Kian could help but ask as he got a cheeky grin on his face.
“Do you get this upset at the fans who like Mark too? Or is this just reserved for me?” Emmy asked totally avoiding the question.
“Is he your favorite?” Kian challenged her.
Pulling his head down Emmy gave him a tight hug. “Kian what am I going to do with you?” She chuckled. “Does it really bother you that much?”
Kian shrugged as he gave her a grin. He tried to pass it off as joking, but the truth was it did bother him. He was her knight in shining armor. The thought that title could be taken away and given to someone else didn’t sit well with him.
“Listen I was in shock this afternoon finding out that my friend is in one of the most talented bands in the UK. “ Emmy pulled back to look at him. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you something.”
“Tell me what?” Kian cocked his head.
“I’m so proud of you Kian.” Emmy felt her throat tighten up. “Seeing you sing, and seeing all the talent there…I’m just so very proud of you.”
Crushing her in his arms, Kian buried his head in the crook of her neck. She was whispering the words that it seemed he waited a lifetime to hear. Rocking her in his arms, he found that he was kissing her cheek. “Thank ya Little One, thank ya so much baby.”
“See you have nothing to worry about with Mark.” Emmy teased as she pulled up to look at him.
“But I do.” Kian couldn’t help but answer.
“What are you talking about?” Emmy pushed at Kian’s chest. “It’s not like I’m dating him and even if I was, what’s the big deal?”
Kian’s eyes went wide. “You wanna date him?” He exclaimed loudly.
“Kian!” Emmy groaned.
Kian hung his head as he sighed. “It’s just that I gotta look out for ya, Little One. I mean I know these guys. It’s just that…”
“Just what?”
Raising his head he looked into her eyes. “They’re not good enough for you.”
Emmy’s eyes softened as she reached up to caress his cheek. “Oh Kian.”
“I’m serious. You deserve so much better. I just wanna make sure the guy ya end up with is worthy of ya.” Kian shrugged his shoulders. “I have to protect ya, Little One.”
“You are very sweet Kian, really you are. But you don’t have to worry about me. I’m not dating Mark. Remember this works both ways. I’m your guardian angel too.” Emmy reminded him. Then her face fell as she blinked away tears.
“Emmy, what’s wrong?” Kian immediately became concerned.
“I’m so sorry for not being here when you needed me.” She began to speak in riddles.
“What are you talkin’ about?” Kian gave her a puzzled look.
“I saw the picture in the magazine.” When he still looked at her confused, Emmy pressed on. “What happened with Tommy. It was Tommy wasn’t it?”
Kian stiffened as he stepped back. “Who told ya?”
“I was telling Bridget about when we were young, and she showed me the magazine.” Emmy bit her lip. “I never felt so bad for leaving than I did at that moment.”
“There was nothin’ that ya could have done, Emmy.” Kian’s voice sounded far away. “It wasn’t your choice to leave. But now you’re back.”
“For good.” Emmy hugged him again.
“Now I’m the one who has to go away.” Kian sighed as he danced slowly with her.
“Oh that’s right! You said you were going on a business trip. I take it that means the world tour I’ve been hearing so much about from Bridget?” Emmy couldn’t help but tease him.
Kian nodded. “Yea. We’ll be gone for about four months. I have to leave by the end of the week. Us lads are gonna meet with Priscilla and Paula, our choreographers. They are gonna teach us to shake our asses. If I remember correctly from this afternoon someone said I was pretty good at doin’ that. ” His eyes flashed with amusement as Emmy blushed. “Not to mention learnin’ vocals and just gettin' ready.”
“It’s sounds like a lot of hard work.” Emmy mused.
“Oh it is. You would never guess how much work goes into a show.” Kian nodded his head in agreement.
“When do you sleep?” Emmy asked in awe.
“Usually when we fall over dead in the bus or hotel room.” Kian chuckled. “Sleep becomes a luxury that even us rich guys can’t afford.”
“My poor Kian.” Emmy began to mock him as she patted his chest, laughing as Kian growled playfully at her.
“Can I have my boyfriend back?” Jodi stood there with anger flashing in her eyes.
Emmy quickly turned to look at her, and instantly there was almost a look of shame on her face. “Oh of course Jodi. I’m sorry.” She let go of Kian and stepped away from him.
“Thank you.” Jodi pushed her way past her as she wrapped her arms around Kian possessively. “I think Mark was looking for you.” She gave Emmy a fake overly sweet smile.
“Oh yea, thanks. I guess I do owe him a dance still.” Emmy gave a half smile as she began to walk away from the couple.
Kian looked down angrily at Jodi. “What the fuck was that for?”
“I wanted to finish our dance.” She answered defensively. “I’m your date tonight, incase you have forgotten.”
“It’s just once dance, Jodi.” Kian retorted.
“It’s always just one thing or another with that girl, Kian.” Jodi began to raise her voice.
“What the fuck are ya talkin’ about?” Now Kian was raising his voice.
“You know what? Forget this.” Jodi pushed him away as she turned and began to walk off.
“Get back here! I wanna know what you mean!” Kian was yelling now.
“I’m going home to your parents house!” Jodi yelled back as she began to push past people towards the door.
Glaring at her back Kian began to follow her when Shane grabbed his arm. “Kino, ya ok?”
Turning his head, he gave Shane a brief nod. “Yea, Jodi and I just need to talk.” Then he got this panicked look on his face. “Fuck, I forgot about Emmy.”
“Don’t worry about it, one of us will give her a ride home.” Shane assured him. “Just go to Jodi.” He patted Kian’s shoulder.
“Thanks Shay.” Kian gave him a tight smile as he headed through the crowd on his way to the door.
Watching him go, Shane frowned. If Kian didn’t watch it he was going to lose Jodi. This week he hardly paid attention to her at all. If he did that to Gillian, Kian would have killed him. All of Kian’s attention had been directed at Emmy. Then a thought entered Shane’s mind. Maybe Kian’s heart was in the right place but his brain was just taking it’s own sweet time catching up.
* * * * * *
Kian walked tiredly into the foyer as he threw his keys down on the table. Rubbing his eyes he was mentally preparing himself for the fight he knew was on its way. Slipping off his black leather jacket, he hung it up. Then taking one step at a time he entered the dark living room.
“Kian?”
Kian’s head lifted and squinted his eyes as one of the lamps was turned on. Trying to focus he found his mother sitting in her nightgown on the couch. “Hey mum, I hope ya weren’t waitin’ up for me. I’m on my way to see Jodi.”
“Jodi is in the shower.” Patricia spoke gently as she folded her hands in her lap. “She seemed pretty upset, honey.”
“I know Mum.” There was sadness in her son’s voice.
“Wanna talk about it?” Patricia offered. In the past whenever there was something on Kian’s mind, they usually had one of their long mother-son heart to hearts. It helped both of them as they talked through any problems they had.
Instead of answering right away, Kian came and sat on the couch next to his mother. He leaned back and closed his eyes as his hands came up to cover them. There were several moments of silence before Kian spoke. “I think Jodi is upset that I’m friends with Emmy.”
Patricia’s brows crinkled. “Now why would Jodi be upset about that? Emmy is a lovely lass.”
Dropping his hands Kian opened his eyes to smile at his mother. “I know Mum. Emmy is brilliant.” Then he began to lose his smile. “Jodi has this notion that me and Emmy are too close. Jodi said that she feels she’s losin’ me.”
Patricia sighed deeply as she put a hand on Kian’s shoulder. “That is a tough one. Did you tell Jodi that Emmy is just a very good mate? I mean you two grew up together.” Then she gave Kian a curious look when nothing she was saying was affecting him. “But Emmy has grown up, now hasn’t she? She turned into a very beautiful woman.” She started to see the real problem here.
“Oh yea she has.” Kian suddenly got this heated tone to his voice. “It seems that every fuckin’ male under the sun has suddenly realized this.” He muttered.
“Kian.” Patricia couldn’t help but chastise her son for his swearing.
“Sorry Mum.” Kian grinned.
“No you’re not.” Patricia laughed softly.
“Seriously, what makes these guys think they are good enough for her?” Kian asked aloud. “I mean here comes Mark and he thinks that he can charm her? Trust me, I’ve seen Mark work, and I don’t want Emmy anywhere near that.”
It was then that Patricia fully understood what was bothering her son. She had a slight concern this might happen. She wouldn’t want to be in Kian’s place for all the money in Ireland. But she didn’t want to standby and watch Kian or anyone else get hurt either. “Does Emmy seem to like Mark?” She found that was the only question she felt safe in asking at this point.
Kian instantly got a hard look on his face. In his mind he could see the smile that Emmy gave Mark as they danced. Deep inside he hated the fact that so far only Mark got to see that smile. A flash of jealously raced through Kian, as he secretly wanted her to smile at him like that. “I don’t know.” He replied sadly as he let his head fall into his hands.
But Patricia could see that Kian did know and it was eating him up. Her son was getting himself into quite a mess; and if he didn’t do something about it everyone would end up hurt. Ruffling her son’s hair, she kissed his forehead. “Emmy is and always will be your best friend, Kian. Remember that.” She stood up and looked down at her son.
“Mum, do ya think it’s possible to love a friend too much?” Kian winced, instantly feeling stupid for asking the question. He didn’t know what he was feeling for Emmy. But what he did know was that he felt closer to her now than he ever had before. She was special and had a special part of his heart that Jodi couldn’t touch.
The question took Patricia by surprise. She took a long hard look at her son as she tried to decide how to answer it. Opening her mouth she tried to give him the best answer possible. “No, Kian I don’t. You just have to decide how to spend your love whether it is a mate or a girlfriend. Goodnight, Kian.” She turned to head up the stairs to bed.
Kian nodded as he leaned back and closed his eyes. His mother’s answer didn’t clear anything up for him. In fact it only made him more confused. Since finding Emmy again, he had been very confused. Instantly his mind was flooded with her image.
God she was beautiful. He wasn’t prepared for just how amazing she looked. He smiled to himself as he thought of just how wonderful she was, so caring and gentle. She would be a perfect girlfriend to some guy. Then he lost the smile at that thought. All of a sudden his eyes snapped open. All the things he had been thinking about Emmy just now, he had though about Jodi when they first got together.
“No no no! Emmy is me friend…that’s all.” He repeated to himself, almost like a mantra. It’s just the fact that we’ve been apart so long, he thought. Nine years was quite a chunk of time to be without your best friend. If you’re just friends why are you noticing the brightness of her eyes or the fullness of her lips, his mind asked him. Kian shook his head violently as he stood up. “NO! Emmy is me friend, and I won’t fuckin’ ruin that.” He swore under his breath. Yet, as he headed up to bed the last thought on his mind was Emmy’s smile for Mark, and how he wished to God that it was for him.
