Sherrie climbed into her old college friend’s car. She could tell she’d been crying. “What is it?” Sandra asked. Sherrie cried out all that went on earlier that evening, and the last year in general. “Well what did you expect from a rock star?” “They can’t leave women alone.” “Well I thought he was different.” Come stay with me for a few days, if you want I will go with you to get your stuff from Steve’s house when you are ready.” Sherrie thanked her friend and settled in the car. She knew Steve had to be beside himself, not knowing where she was. It was wrong of her to disappear, but maybe it would help him to straighten up. Steve went back to his parent’s house. His mother could tell he’d been crying. She hadn’t seen tears in his eyes since he was a boy. She comforted him the best she could, and she somehow felt responsible for the evening, but she couldn’t very well tell people they weren’t welcome at her home. She knew how Valentina hurt Steve, but that was a long time ago, they were still children basically. It’s going to be alright.” She cooed. “I’ll stay one more night; I can’t leave not knowing where she is.” Steve said. He sat up a couple more hours, hoping, praying Sherrie came to her senses and came back to the house. Sleep would not come easily to Steve that night.
Sherrie on the other hand was sleeping peacefully in her friend’s guest room. She decided she would not be on Steve’s roller coaster ride anymore and was thankfully able to fall asleep. The following morning; Steve woke up, hoping he’d just had a bad dream, and looked on Sherrie’s side of the bed and knew it was real. He showered, had a quick breakfast, kissed his mom and hit the road. He was like a mad man getting back to the home that he and Sherrie shared. He called before leaving his mother’s, but figured Sherrie just needed to cool down, but she would be there. He felt better suddenly. Yeah, that was it, she’s home safe and sound, she just wanted to scare me out of my wits and she succeeded. Steve got home. There was no evidence that she had been there, and panic set up in him again. “Ok Sherrie this has gone far enough.” He said to the empty house. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two weeks went by before Steve heard any sort of news. When some of the band members saw him at the recording studio, he looked awful, circles under his eyes, unshaven. “Man you have to get yourself together.” Jon told him, slapping him on the back. “Look at this song I wrote, I named it, Faithfully.” Steve took the lyrics from Jon’s hand, and read them. He turned his head so that the other men couldn’t see the tears welling up in his eyes, the song was hitting too close to home. “Um, Steve.” Ross said. “My wife has been in contact with Sherrie, she is fine, staying with a friend.” “And you’re just now telling me this? The tears turned to fury. Steve was mad, but thankful Ross said something. “I mean, I’m sorry, thanks for telling me.” Where is she?” Steve asked. “I was told not to say anything, but I don’t think it’s right for you to be in the dark like that.” “Where is she?” “Lemoore.” “I was just in that area.” “My wife’s going to kill me for saying anything.” “I’m going to kill you.” “Where exactly is she staying? Steve asked. Ross didn’t readily have an address. Do you at least have a name? “Sandra, Sandra Atkins, it finally came to Ross. “Where are you going?” The men called after Steve. He didn’t answer. He rushed home shaved and splashed some cool water on his face. He called his mother up and asked her to look in the phone book for a “Sandra Atkins” “Is everything alright dear?” “Yes mom, I was told that Sherrie is staying with her. “Look in the Lemoore section.” Steve waited a few minutes until his mother found the only Sandra Atkins listed. He got the address and was out the door in minutes. When he finally made it to Lemoore, he stopped at a gas station for directions to the street she lived on. It took a couple wrong turns but Steve finally arrived at the address. He parked a little ways down the street, as not to warn Sherrie. He walked up on the porch and knocked. The attractive young woman opening the door knew exactly who this handsome stranger was. “Sherrie.” She called and looked back at Steve. She was on her friend’s side for sure, but she couldn’t help but be thrilled that a rock star was standing on her porch. She wanted to see his eyes, but they were hidden by his shades. Sherrie walked into the living room, and stopped cold when she saw Steve. A look of puzzlement crossed her face. She didn’t say a word. “I’m sorry.” Was all Steve could say. “Please come home so we can talk.” “That Diane.” Sherrie said. “Don’t be mad at her or Ross, I forced it out of him.” The lovers just stood and looked at each other. Sherrie refused to budge, and Steve didn’t want to just rudely walk into someone’s house. “I’ll leave you two alone.” Sandra said and went into the kitchen. “Let’s go home.” He stepped towards her, but she stepped back. She knew once his hands were on her, she was like putty. “I’m not going to touch you, I’m just thankful you’re ok.” It took some twenty minutes for her agree to go with him. She gathered up her belongings and hugged her friend tightly, thanking her for coming to her rescue. “Anytime, you know I’m here for you.”Steve and Sherrie drove home in complete silence. Steve didn’t know where to begin. Him walking off with his ex girlfriend was completely innocent, but given the trust issues that Sherrie sometimes had with him, was a bad move on his part. When they got home, they walked into the house. Sherrie sighed and said. “I’m moving out, I’ve made up my mind. Give me a week to find a place.” Steve eyes welled up with tears. He was an emotional man to begin with, and the thought of losing her was a blow to not only his ego, but to his heart. He didn’t think he could take it. “Ok, can we at least sit down and talk, get my side of the story?” He asked. “This should be interesting.” She said snidely. “Valentina is a part of my past, just like there are men in your past.” “Yes, but I would not have just walked off without telling you, especially with the issues we already have, it was thoughtless, very thoughtless.” She continued. He hung his head down, because she was telling the truth. “Is there anything I can do to make this up?” He asked. At that time there was nothing, this was something that had been brewing for a while. “What you can do……..is allow me to have my space, for however long that I need. If I decide I want to give it a go, we will go from there, right now, I don’t want to look at you.” Steve was practically on his knees before her, but she didn’t waiver. He reluctantly gave her, her wish........................
